Booth Seating Sizes: Dimensions, Layouts & How to Choose the Right Fit

Are you starting a new restaurant or looking to refresh your current seating? You’ll need to think beyond appearance and consider the size of the booths and your seating capacity.

Our guide to booth seating sizes (also commonly called “commercial benches” or  “banquettes”) will share what restaurant owners should know about booth sizing to make the best-informed decision for their restaurant.

What Are Standard Booth Seating Sizes for Restaurants?

The standard dimensions of booth seating for restaurants are 30″, 48″, 60″, and 72″ in length, by 36 and 42” in height, with each size designed to accommodate different seating capacities and floor plans.

For example, a 48″ single-sided booth typically seats two guests side by side, while longer 60″ and 72″ booths are commonly used in restaurants that want to accommodate larger groups or maximize seating capacity.

Choosing the right booth size depends on your table dimensions, traffic flow, dining layout, how you balance seating capacity, and the overall guest experience you want to create.

How Tall Should a Restaurant Booth Be?

A restaurant booth is generally 36 or 42 inches in height, depending on the layout and atmosphere of the space.

Thirty-six-inch tall backs are typically the standard option for stock restaurant booths and are often preferred for keeping sightlines open or allowing customers to look out the window or observe wall art. Forty-two-inch tall booths are more proportionate for longer booths or more intimate dining spaces because they provide additional privacy, separation, and a more upscale feel.

What Booth Size and Layout Works Best for Your Floor Plan?

It can be difficult to determine what dimensions of booth seating and layout are best for your restaurant floor plan. It’s not just about style, but the customer’s comfort and floor maneuverability for staff.

To make a more informed decision, let’s break down each type of restaurant booth and its measurements.

Single-Sided Booth

As already mentioned, a single-sided booth is the standard for most restaurants. The size of this booth seating is available in several lengths, with 48-inch models being among the most common, though dimensions can vary depending on the layout and desired atmosphere.

Depending on the booth length selected, seating capacity can range from one guest per side to several guests per side. As a general rule, each size increase adds approximately one additional guest per side:

  • 30″ long booth: 1 guest per side
  • 48″ long booth: 2 guests per side
  • 60″ long booth: 3 guests per side
  • 72″ long booth: 4 guests per side

Single-sided booth heights are generally be 36 or 42 inches. A single-sided booth offers valuable seating room without taking up too much floor space. Single-sided booths can be incorporated into a variety of restaurant layouts and are commonly used along walls, windows, and perimeter seating areas. Their straightforward footprint makes them a flexible option for maximizing seating while preserving valuable floor space.

QA Group’s single-sided booths feature fully upholstered outside backs, making them a versatile option for creating clean, professional seating layouts throughout a restaurant.

Double-Sided Booth

A double-sided booth is essentially two single-sided booths put together and sharing the same backrest, which makes for a practical option for maximizing seating capacity while maintaining an efficient floor plan. This configuration is often more cost-effective than purchasing two separate single-sided booths and placing them back-to-back while achieving a similar seating layout. Because they share a backrest, they help create clean rows of seating and are commonly used in larger dining areas or layouts designed for higher guest volume.

However, some restaurant owners prefer individual single-sided booths because they offer greater flexibility for future layout changes or reconfigurations.

Because double-sided booths mimic single-sided booths, they are usually each 48 inches long, seating 4 people total (2 on each side). They provide restaurant owners with a convenient way to maximize their seating area without feeling crowded.

Deuce Booths

Deuce booths are the perfect fit for smaller restaurants or a combination of food and another service (think cafe and bookstore). They are smaller than a standard booth, measuring around 30 inches long and 36 inches high, which seats two people.

QA Group offers both heights, though 36” often feels more proportional.

You can place deuce booths throughout your restaurant or arrange them in corners to provide a private, intimate atmosphere. Deuce booths are also great for oddly shaped restaurant floors.

L-Shape Booths

To maximize your corner spaces and create flexible seating arrangements, use L-shape booths. Sitting four to six guests or more, an L-shape is the perfect seating space for large parties without sacrificing the rest of your floor.

Rather than being a single standard booth size, an L-shape is typically created by combining a corner booth unit with one or more straight booth sections.

Because these configurations are modular, the overall dimensions can vary significantly based on your floor plan, seating goals, and available space. L-shaped booth layouts are popular in restaurants that want to make efficient use of corners while creating a more intimate dining experience for guests.

Combine an L-shape booth with some nice lighting and artwork, and you’ll create a space everyone wants to dine in.

Half-Circle Booths (Or U-Booths)

Give your customers a sense of privacy without isolating them with a half-circle booth (also known as U-booths), generally seating six people. Customers can easily converse with each other while still being able to see servers, giving an open feel within the dining space.

Because half-circle booths are available in a variety of configurations and sizes, dimensions can vary significantly by manufacturer and design. When planning a half-circle booth layout, consider floor space, table sizing, and traffic flow to ensure guests and staff can move around the restaurant comfortably.

Though they vary, half-circle booths often seat 6 people comfortably, being 84″ to 96″ from end to end.

Three-Quarter-Circle Booths

Providing even more privacy and seating space (can seat eight to ten people), three-quarter-circle booths are best suited for restaurants with plenty of space that want to feel intimate at the same time. A 3/4-circle booth takes up a lot of space—often anywhere from 90 to 144 inches in length, with heights commonly available in 36-inch and 42-inch options.

With a three-quarter-circle booth, servers can see all their diners without sacrificing privacy. Because of their unique shape and larger footprint, these booths are often used as a focal point within the dining room and may require a dedicated seating area to maximize both comfort and traffic flow.

Standard vs. Custom Booth Sizes for Restaurants: Which Is Right for You?

When considering the size of your restaurant booths, there are many factors to consider: your budget, floor space, desired lead time, and customization options such as dimensions, upholstery, and materials.

In general, standard-size booths are often the best fit for faster turnaround times and more budget-conscious projects, while custom booths offer greater flexibility in dimensions, materials, upholstery, and overall design to better match your restaurant’s layout and aesthetic goals.

Here is a handy chart that explores both options.

Standard Size Custom Size
Quick delivery due to ready-to-order configurations May take longer to arrive due to being built custom
More turnkey design options May be restricted in what materials can be used due to custom size
Works well when standard booth sizes fit your floor plan Designed to fit specific layouts, seating goals, and traffic flow needs
Create cohesiveness when standard sizes align with design vision Tailor booth dimensions and styling to achieve a specific vision
Can look similar to other restaurants Create something that is completely “yours”
May have some difficulty fitting standard-size booths within your floor plan Perfectly match your floor plan
Work with the dimensions available  Can adjust length, depth, height, and layout
More budget-friendly Can cost more money

The right choice depends on your restaurant’s layout, timeline, budget, and overall design vision.
